Friday's Fond Memory
my 'birth' day
x
So today, twenty-seven years ago, at 11:36 a.m. my mom gave birth to her first child, me. In a time before epidurals were common-place, my mom had labored for quite some time, as I would not turn my head the proper way and was prolonging things unnecessarily. As the story goes, the waiting room was full of grandparents and aunts and uncles, all awaiting the 'first' grandbaby. Would I be a boy or a girl? What would I look like? I can only truly appreciate the feelings they were experiencing after having my own first baby. The nurse came out and told everyone they could go back and see the 'baby' - "Is it a boy or a girl?" they all inquired - "I won't say, but the baby sure is pretty" the nurse replied (or so the story goes). My mom says the first thing she noticed were my long fingers that fanned our from underneath the blanket as she took me in her arms. After taking me home my mom remembers thinking "Wow, eighteen years is a LONG time" (a thought I had myself when we brought C home) but here we are, twenty-seven years later. I guess it wasn't that long after all.
