She explained it like this, "I'm just having a really hard night Mama." I could see that through her tears, through her chapped lips from the bitter cold, past her runny nose, and of course without a blankie for comfort...sigh...me too babe.
x
"Let's just have some quiet time." Her request was simple.
x
So we lit candles, the way we do sometimes. And we just sat for a few minutes. B made us hot tea and the girls took turns saying their piece. Really their 'peace'.
x
Carolyn explained that she is sad that her skin always hurts, and she hates putting medicine on it.... then she inquired about tomorrow's Valentine's Day party at school and what candy she might aquire.
x
Julia got ticked remembering an incident at school involving children either not sharing or pushing, which are the two major themes of preschool at age three.... then she, too, began to look forward to tomorrow's chocolate, and her new found love "Eli" who is going to marry her someday. It's true, she tells us everyday.
x
Then we attempted true silence, and got a good ten seconds out of it before they couldn't stand it any longer. But there was something in the candlelight, and warm tea, and quiet that calmed us all down.
x
Now they sleep, no tears, no blankies, no pacifiers. Just sleep.

Aw, such a nice ritual. And it seems like it really comforts them! Hopefully you got more sleep!
